The Chicago Network believes strongly that increasing the representation of women in the executive suites and on boards of directors in Chicago's companies and nonprofits is important and necessary. Studies demonstrate that the more diversity you have in your workplace, the stronger the financial performance. In addition, there is evidence that increasing representation leads to better corporate governance as well. And yet our research shows that representation is too low and progress is too slow. It is imperative that companies tap the entire pool of talent to realize these benefits.
By developing and promoting women, companies take advantage of a resource that has more power in the marketplace than ever before. Consider the influence of women as consumers: we will spend $13 trillion in 2009 and $18 trillion by 2014, according to a September 2009 Harvard Business Review article. Women own almost half of all equities and make more than 50% of investment decisions. It is time that the leaders of Chicago's largest organizations reflect this influence. Organizations that understand the importance of building teams that reflect the diversity of their customers, clients and shareholders, will outperform their peers.
Every organization has the opportunity to add diversity and capability to their leadership ranks. Take advantage of what we've heard from both women - and men - who have learned the value of an inclusive workplace. Use their experiences to advance women at all levels of the organizations with which you are involved!
